CLASSES AND EVENTS
SONGWRITING & ARRANGING CLASSES
Songwriting I - (Intermediate)
Learn to observe the world as a songwriter, develop habits to nurture inspiration, and turn your ideas into lyrical melodies. Led by Danielle Ate the Sandwich, this songwriting class dives deeper into crafting more personal and authentic songs. This class uses writing prompts and exercises to unlock ideas and stories, and develop stronger personal and descriptive details. We will explore the elements of a song, building melody, form and song structure, and how exactly to turn your poetry into lyrics. There will be time for one on one conversations with the instructors, if you have specific questions or want to bring in a piece you’re working on.
Arranging I - (Intermediate)
Jeff Freling and Erin McGrane of Victor & Penny show you helpful tips and techniques to take that song you love and make it your own. We’ll talk about what makes a great song great as we explore key elements of arranging such as intros and tags, interesting chord substitutions (including beefing up with jazz chords), strumming styles, finding the right key for you, dynamics and more. Show your style and mix it up with panache and confidence to sound your best and make a song your own. There will be Q&A time at the end of the workshop.
Performance Skills: Level I - (Beginner)
Led by Victor & Penny, learn valuable tools on how to present your songs confidently in a live performance. Together, we’ll tackle how to connect with the audience, manage stage fright, and focus on singing, playing and remembering your lyrics all at the same time (gah!). We’ll break it all down for you as we discover what makes a great performance great, and how you can have great performances too.
Performance Skills: Level II - (Intermediate)
We’ll take it to the next level in this hands-on open-mic style class. In a safe, encouraging environment we’ll try out the things we learned in Level I. You get to present your song and work on it one-on-one with V&P to hone your performance and ask questions. This is a great chance to gain experience and have some fun. Performance II is one of our most popular workshops – come find out why and take yourself to the next level. Led by Victor & Penny with Danielle Ate the Sandwich
Get out of the Box - (Beginner/All Levels)
Are you stuck in a rut? Looking for a new way to practice? This class asks participants to try something new and different, to shake up the status quo of your practicing or playing. Led by Danielle Ate the Sandwich, we will try standing, moving, yelling, whispering, clapping, snapping, laughing, and see how our playing changes when our mind is challenged in new ways. Can being silly result in better performances and achieve a higher level of playing? Find out for yourself during this beginner class. All levels of experience are welcome, but we will use basic chords and play standing up and moving around.
